Asus unveiled a new lineup of ROG and TUF gaming laptops for 2023 at CES in January. In India, the company first introduced a first wave of high-end gaming laptops in March, followed by in May a second wave of mid-range models. The earlier batch includes the laptop we’re reviewing today, the ROG Strix Scar 18 (2023). This powerful gaming laptop has a starting price of Rs. 2,79,990 in India, but the model we’re reviewing has the best laptop GPU available from Nvidia and costs Rs. 3,59,990.

Design and features of the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2023)

It is designed to be used at home on a desk. The Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 is a large, heavy laptop. In addition to RGB lighting and translucent plastic around the ports, it has a matte black finish.

It comes with a 330W AC power adapter that uses a 16A power outlet, which restricts where you can use or charge it in your home. One of its best features is the display. A 16:10 aspect ratio, 240Hz refresh rate, and 18-inch QHD (2560×1600) IPS panel make up the ROG Strix Scar 18.

It can play back Dolby Vision in OTT video streaming apps, supports Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, is Pantone validated, complies with Asus’ ROG Nebula specification, and has a brightness of 500 nits.

Additionally, it has a sizable trackpad, a full-sized keyboard with a number pad and dedicated buttons, and RGB LED backlighting for each key with Aura Sync. There is no SD card slot or security lock slot; all ports are on either side of the laptop.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 software and specification information

An Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 32GB of DDR5 4800MHz RAM, 2TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD storage, and an Intel Core i9-13980HX mobile CPU are all included in the gaming laptop called the ROG Strix Scar 18.

It includes a 90WHr battery, four speakers with Dolby Atmos enhancement, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. It also has a 720p webcam.

To accommodate a full-width heatsink with seven heat pipes and three fans, Asus redesigned the motherboard and chassis.

The Windows 11, Office, and McAfee software, along with the MyAsus app for simpler tasks and the Armoury Crate app for more complicated tasks, are preinstalled on the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18.

Performance and battery life of the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2023)

This high-end laptop performs incredibly well. It has a tall display, quiet keys, and a comfortable keyboard. However, when powered by batteries, it frequently gets warm.

POV-Ray’s trace time was 27 seconds, Cinebench R20’s CPU benchmark scored 778 points, PCMark 10 scored 7,803 points, 3DMark scored 13,753 points, and Port Royale scored 10,438 points. With read and write speeds of over 12GBps and 7GBps, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 is a fantastic gaming SSD.

Even when switching to the highest preset, Ray Tracing: Overdrive, it still maintained an average frame rate of 124 frames per second at the QHD resolution. The battery life is also excellent, with a maximum runtime of 2-3 hours on average.

Final words

Even though the 2023 Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 is a potent gaming laptop with the best mobile CPU and GPU currently available for a Windows laptop, it does get warm.
