Kuldeep Yadav’s exceptional bowling spearheaded India’s dominance on the first day of the fifth Test against England in Dharamsala. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin, marking his 100th Test appearance, also made a significant impact by taking four wickets.

With the superb performance of the spin duo, India wrapped up England’s innings in just 57.4 overs. At the end of the day’s play, India stood at 135-1, with Rohit Sharma, the skipper, unbeaten on 52 and Shubman Gill on 26.

As the last wicket of England fell, Kuldeep joyously tossed the battered SG Test ball towards his teammate Ashwin as a mark of respect for Ashwin’s milestone 100th Test match. Ashwin reciprocated with a smile, initiating a friendly exchange between the two spinners.

In a display of camaraderie, Ashwin continuously returned the ball to Kuldeep, encouraging him to enjoy the spotlight. Despite Ashwin’s crucial four-wicket haul, it was Kuldeep’s five-wicket haul that stood out, narrowly missing in the previous Test against England.

During the post-match interview, Kuldeep elaborated on the interaction with Ashwin, expressing admiration for Ashwin’s humility and acknowledging his significance in the team.

“He is incredibly humble and kind. Playing his 100th Test match for India is an incredible achievement. I’ve witnessed his journey over the seven years I’ve been with the team. It’s wonderful to have him in the dressing room and learn from him. Given it was his 100th match, I felt he deserved that ball. He’s truly a special player,” Kuldeep remarked.

When reminded that he could keep the ball, considering Ashwin’s 35 five-wicket hauls, Kuldeep revealed that Ashwin himself suggested it.

“He actually told me the same thing! He said, ‘I’ve got 35, so you keep it!'” Kuldeep shared.

In this series, Ashwin has taken 21 wickets, with another innings to go, while Kuldeep, who wasn’t selected for the opening match, has 17 wickets to his name so far. With India already securing the series with a 3-1 lead, they aim to conclude the home season on a high note with another victory in Dharamsala before players transition to their respective franchises for the upcoming Indian Premier League edition.
