During the match, Gill took center stage as the sole performer. After being put in to bat by the Mumbai Indians on a pitch that appeared patchy due to heavy rain in Ahmedabad, Gill and Wriddhiman Saha provided a solid start with a fifty-run partnership before Saha was dismissed.

Gill then unleashed his attacking prowess by hitting sixes against Piyush Chawla, Kumar Kartikeya, and Akash Madhwal, along with several boundaries, reaching his century in just 49 balls. He continued to dominate the bowling attack, accumulating 29 more runs in just 11 deliveries before being dismissed in the 17th over.

Following his exceptional innings, Gill has now scored three centuries in his last four matches of the ongoing IPL season. He has surpassed Faf du Plessis, the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), to claim the top position on the IPL 2023 batting scorecard. Gill is on track to win the prestigious Orange Cap this season.

Du Plessis, with 730 runs, is currently in second place, followed by RCB’s Virat Kohli with 639 runs at an average of 53.25. Yashasvi Jaiswal of the Rajasthan Royals (625) and Devon Conway of the Chennai Super Kings (625) occupy the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

Gill has amassed 851 runs so far in the IPL 2023, making him the third batsman after Virat Kohli of RCB and Jos Buttler of the Rajasthan Royals to score more than two centuries in a single edition of the Indian Premier League. Kohli had hit four centuries in 2016, finishing the season with 973 runs, while Buttler achieved the same feat with four centuries in 2022, accumulating 863 runs for the Rajasthan Royals.

In the previous week’s league matches, Gill achieved back-to-back centuries against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad, becoming the fourth player, alongside Shikhar Dhawan, Buttler, and Kohli, to accomplish this milestone in the IPL.

With his sensational knock of 129 runs off 60 balls, including seven fours and 10 sixes, Gill now finds himself behind only Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul, who have each hit six centuries in T20 matches.
