Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, returned to office to the House of Representatives following a stay of punishment in a criminal defamation case involving his remark about the “Modi surname.” At a time when the parliament has experienced multiple breakdowns over the Opposition alliance INDIA’s request for an in-depth debate on the violence in Manipur, preceded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark on the matter, Mr. Gandhi will return to the Lok Sabha to serve his constituency Wayanad.

Congress wants Rahul Gandhi to attend a no-confidence vote in the House

Following his reinstatement, Congress stated, “It wanted him to play a significant role in the discussion of the no-confidence motion slated probably discussed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.”

Manickam Tagore’s statement

Manickam Tagore, a Congress member, told NDTV that the party wants Rahul Gandhi to join in the debate over the no-confidence motion because he recently visited Manipur. He stated that it looked like he would present the Manipur-related facts in the Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi received a two-year prison sentence

After being found guilty in a defamation case and given a two-year prison sentence by a Gujarat court on March 23, Rahul Gandhi became ineligible to serve in the Lok Sabha. Any sentence of more than two years immediately disqualifies a lawmaker.

Shashi Tharoor’s remark

Shashi Tharoor, a senior Congressman, referred to it as “a triumph for the truth and our democratic system.” He tweeted, “Greetings, the formal notification of @RahulGandhi’s reinstatement with great joy. He can return to serving the people of India and his Wayanad constituents in the Lok Sabha. An accomplishment for the truth and our democracy!”

SC questioned the trial court’s decision

While directing a halt on Rahul Gandhi’s conviction on Friday, the Supreme Court noted that while his comments weren’t of excellent flavor, his exclusion from the parliament would impact his constituents. The top court claimed that the trial judge imposed the case’s maximal punishment of two years, noting that a day less of the term would not have resulted in an MP’s expulsion.

After receiving a sentence to two years in prison in a defamation case for his remarks concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last name, Mr. Gandhi got banned from running for office in May.

Gandhi, who has continually declined to apologize, tweeted following the top court’s reprieve: “Get what may, my obligation stays unchanged. Safeguard the concept of India.”
