BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri Abuses Muslim MP in Lok Sabha

In the parliament, a BJP member insulted a Muslim MP

In the parliament, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power in India, insulted a Muslim MP and used anti-Muslim slurs. Ramesh Bidhuri, a member of the BJP, called opposition Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) member Kunwar Danish Ali, among other offensive terms, a “terrorist” and a “pimp” during a discussion on the historic triumph of India’s moon mission on Thursday.

“You radical… I convey you, you circumcised,” the lawmaker from the Indian capital’s South Delhi region said in Hindi, through a slur commonly used against Muslims in India. In a noticeable attack after a viral clip, Bidhuri said, “I will witness this Mulla outdoors,” as at least two higher BJP figures and previous union ministers giggled alongside him.

Online users and opposition groups felt anger at the comments made within the recently opened parliament building and argued for severe punishment against Bidhuri.

Ali told the news agency that he was “not shocked” by the comments but was nonetheless offended and hurt. “I prefer to inquire from Mohan Bhagwat and Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi: Is this manner the RSS instructs its members in their schools?” said he.

The term “RSS” stands for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, also known as the National Association of Volunteers, the far-right ideological forerunner of the BJP, which is currently in power and seeks to establish an ethnic Hindu state in the nation with the highest population. The RSS, led by Bhagwat, claims to have millions of lifetime members in India and abroad.

In the words of Ali, “It communicates volumes regarding what a common Muslim in this nation must be facing” if a legislator could feel assaulted in a parliament like this. He claimed that the opposition lawmakers available during the discussion supported him. “The MPs from Congress and TMC [Trinamool Congress], especially the women MPs, spoke out,” he said.

Mahua Moitra, a TMC lawmaker who shared the video on X first, questioned BJP president JP Nadda if the right-wing party would take action against Bidhuri in a social media post. She wrote on X, “Muslim and OBC abuse has become rooted in the BJP’s culture.” OBCs are the legally recognized “other backward castes” in India, which used to get excluded by the privileged castes.

Indian politician Omar Abdullah claimed that hatred of Muslims “recently became embraced like never earlier” in India. Jairam Ramesh, a Congress lawmaker, asked for the expulsion of Bidhuri from the lower house.

Defence Minister and earlier BJP President Rajnath Singh apologized as parliamentary anger over the comment rose.
