The BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president, K. Annamalai’s remarks on C N Annadurai, a leader of the Dravidian movement, were the immediate cause of the tense relationship between the two parties. They decided in response to BJP’s state president, K. Annamalai, who accused the party of insulting Dravidian leader C N Annadurai and the late J Jayalalithaa. The AIADMK will now lead an alliance to take on other allies in the 2024 elections.

At a meeting with his party’s MPs, MLAs, district secretaries, and senior officials on Monday night in Chennai, Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS), the general secretary of the AIADMK, enacted an ordinance to this effect.

After the meeting, amid celebrations and the popping of fireworks at the party’s corporate office in Chennai, AIADMK deputy general secretary K P Munuswamy read out the decision: “To acknowledge the beliefs of our two-crore cadre, from today, the AIADMK will depart the BJP and the NDA.”

The BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president, K. The BJP’s state unit, according to Munuswamy, “continues to insult Annadurai, EPS, and the late J Jayalalithaa for the past year, criticizing their ideologies and also demeaning the mega-conference held in Madurai in August after tribunals upheld EPS’ rising in the party and O Panneerselvam’s ouster.”
“The AIADMK will be the leader of an alliance to take on other allies in the elections of 2024. This choice is unanimous. Not even a single individual opposed this resolution,” he continued.
