If elected, Trump promises to impose a reciprocal tax on India

Trump raises the issue of the high taxes the Indian government levies

Donald Trump, a former US president who is running for reelection, is bringing up the subject of the high taxes India levies on some American goods, particularly the renowned Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and he encompasses threatened to implement a reciprocal tax if he wins the presidency in 2024.

Trump termed India a “tariff king”

Trump referred to India as a “tariff king” during his first term as US president. In May 2019, he ended India’s Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) preferential market entry into the US because India had not granted the US “equitable and adequate access to its markets.”

“Their tariffs varied from 100 to 200%,” Trump

“Another matter I want is taxation that would get applied to us if India took us; India has many tariffs. I witnessed it with Harley-Davidson. How are things in a country like India? I asked. Oh no, please. Why? Their tariffs ranged from 100 to 200 percent,” The former president claimed.

“I said that they should sell their Indian motorbike. They produce an Indian motorcycle. However, when you make a Harley and send it there, it is not taxed or subject to tariffs because they were not conducting business. Why don’t you conduct business with India, I questioned. No one wants it because the charge is so high. But they want us to go over and construct a plant so there won’t be any tariffs,” according to Trump.

Trump’s statement

“All right, that’s not beneficial, they said. Okay, that’s not our arrangement. We don’t do that. And I was very harsh with them. India, however, is enormous. Brazil is big. I mean very, very big on tariffs. We had a few attendees, including the senator from Pennsylvania, a state I adore. However, this man was dreadful. Can we impose India 100% if they charge us 20% and we pay nothing for their goods? That is not free trade, sir. Can we impose a 50% fee on them? No, sir. 25, 10, anything at all? No. What the hell is wrong? I yelled. The situation is not right. You are aware of what I’m referring to,” he said.

According to significant national polls, the former president, who remains involved in several legal proceedings and indictments, is in the lead in the Republican presidential primary and receives more than half of the GOP vote.
