Shreyas Iyer Injury – Gavaskar and Harbhajan Raised Concerns

Indian captain Rohit Sharma announced that Shreyas Iyer, who had only played one inning, was on the bench for the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match against Pakistan due to an injury concern. The team sheet originally listed KL Rahul as the 13th man and Iyer as his standard No. 4, but the names were crossed out later before their release, making it a “forced change.”

Iyer’s position in the starting XI came into question as the conversation shifted to whether both could make the lineup. Legendary cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Sunil Gavaskar seemed “concerned” regarding Iyer’s injury. Gavaskar expressed disappointment at Iyer’s unfortunate turn of events and suggested India would need a backup plan if he couldn’t recover for the World Cup.

Gavaskar and Harbhajan question the most recent injury to Shreyas Iyer

The illustrious cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh appeared “concerned” when Iyer suffered a second back injury on Sunday, forcing him out of the starting XI for the match against Pakistan.

Shreyas Iyer’s injury

When captain Rohit Sharma announced at the toss of the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match against Pakistan on Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium that Shreyas Iyer, who just joined the squad two games ago and had only played one inning so far, got on the bench for the crucial game due to a new injury concern, veterans, specialists, and supporters seemed shocked.

The team sheet originally listed KL Rahul as the 13th man and Iyer as his standard No. 4, but the names got crossed out later before their release, so it was, in fact, a “forced change,” as Rohit noted.

The primary debate before the Ind vs. Pak contest

The debate leading up to India’s Asia Cup match with Pakistan was whether to start KL Rahul, who has left since May with a hamstring injury, or Ishan Kishan, who took his place in the lineup for the group-stage match against India’s bitter rivals and scored an incredible 82 runs.

Iyer’s position in the starting XI promptly came into question as the conversation shifted to whether both could make the lineup.

The legendary cricketers seemed “concerned” regarding Iyer’s injury

Iyer recently made a comeback after a protracted injury layoff, like KL Rahul. Since March of this year, he has been out of the game. The legendary cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Sunil Gavaskar seemed “concerned” when he sustained a second back injury on Sunday, leading him out of the playing XI for the game against Pakistan.

Gavaskar: India planned to have an alternate ready

Gavaskar expressed his disappointment at Iyer’s unfortunate turn of events to India Today after the playing XI emerged on Sunday. He thought Iyer looked in good form during that 14-run knock he played against Pakistan in Pallekele and added that India would need a backup plan if he can’t recover in time for the World Cup.

Is it unlucky or what…? Harbhajan

Contrarily, Harbhajan felt that the NCA should consider it accountable, given the rise in players reporting repeated injuries, before pointing out that Rahul gained from Iyer’s injury.

“Injuries are a natural part of playing sports. However, getting hurt so frequently either indicates bad luck or that you are preparing a spot for KL Rahul. I believe that his position in the team will suffer because of his injury, which will help KL Rahul’s situation,” he added.

A formal update on the injury will come from Team India soon.
