WHAT HAPPENED?
As he steered Argentina to victory at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, Messi had an outstanding year. During the competition, the Argentinean scored seven goals and contributed three assists, earning him the Golden Ball trophy.

Messi was ranked among TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2023 after helping his team win the World Cup and finishing football.

In the award declaration list, tennis legend Federer, who is widely regarded as the most outstanding tennis player of all time, wrote a tribute to Messi in which he compared his football to art.

WHAT FEDERER SAID?
“The 35-year-old Messi’s long record of excellence is the thing that most delights me about him. It is very challenging to accomplish this and then keep it up. His angular passes are masterpieces, and he dribbles like a magician. His perception and foresight are almost incomprehensible,” Federer wrote.

“Recently, I finished my professional career. Now that I think about it, athletes carry a lot of weight. However, we are completely unaware of it in our daily lives. With Messi representing both a renowned club and a nation with intense national pride, that responsibility must feel especially heavy for him. The victory by Argentina in the World Cup was outstanding. An incredible sporting moment was witnessed by people all over the world as millions of fans took to the streets of Buenos Aires to celebrate. Football is the most played sport in the world, so even those who don’t play it must have understood its true significance,” he added.

THE LARGER FRAME
Roger Federer, who announced he was quitting competitive tennis in September 2022, also hoped in his note that Messi, 35, would be capable to play for a while longer.

“When I was younger, Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta were my favorite Argentine sports figures. I had the good fortune to interact with both of them. They inspired me. As a result, Messi can now motivate future generations,” he continued.

WHAT COMES UP FOR MESSI?
The future at PSG for Lionel Messi is uncertain. Since he hasn’t signed a contract extension, Lionel Messi is currently nearing the end of his current agreement with Paris Saint-Gemain (PSG).

Messi joined the team in 2021 after Barcelona was unable to extend his deal due to La Liga’s wage cap regulations. The Argentine has played 68 matches for the Parisians since his transfer, tallying 30 goals and 33 assists.

While the 35-year-old is currently being related with a move back to Barcelona, Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia is rumored to have made him an incredible offer that would pay him $400 million annually.
