MS Dhoni got into a heated argument with in-filed umpires

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has featured some high-voltage action and fights that have taken place in the most controversial ways, and even now, as the playoffs are underway, the drama has not subsided. The captain of Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni, got into a heated exchange with the umpires at the start of the 16th over of their previous qualifier match.

Exactly what happened?

During the last few overs of GT’s run chase, MS Dhoni was seen arguing with the on-field umpires, which led to a four-minute delay.

Matheesha Pathirana was returning to bowl his second over after the fifteen overs when the umpires interrupted because the pacer had been away from the pitch for the previous nine minutes, which required him to wait until the disputed time before he could come on to bowl.

What is an IPL regulation?

By IPL regulations, any player who leaves the pitch for longer than eight minutes must return for a comparable period before he is permitted to resume bowling. However, as soon as Pathirana returned to the field, he was assigned to bowl the 16th over, which the umpires protested.

Dhoni Decided to wait for 9 minutes

The CSK captain decided they were willing to wait for the remaining amount of time until Pathirana is qualified to bowl after Dhoni approached the officials and discussed the situation with them.

After nearly five minutes of argument with the umpires, Dhoni was informed that the team might be penalized for slow over-rate.

Speaking of the game, CSK easily won Qualifier 1 and advanced to the IPL 2023 finals.
