Monsoon Arrived In Kerala After 1 Week Delay

According to the India Meteorological Department, the monsoon began over Kerala on June 8, one week later than usual, while the southwest monsoon was moving into other regions. Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ postponed the beginning. Today, June 8, the weather office declared, “The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala.” Weather experts had previously stated that Cyclone “Biparjoy” had been impacting the severity of the monsoon and that it would make a “mild” reach over Kerala. “In light of this, the monsoon is not considered promising,” the Vice president of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet’s remarked.

IMD: Monsoon is now finally here in Kerala after a week of delay due to Cyclone Biparjoy

According to the India Meteorological Department, the monsoon began over Kerala on June 8, one week later than usual, while the southwest monsoon was moving into other regions. Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ postponed the beginning.

“Kerala is now experiencing the southwest monsoon”

On Thursday, one week later than usual, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the beginning of the monsoon over Kerala. Today, June 8, the weather office declared, “The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala.”

IMD report

The statement stated that “the monsoon has advanced into remaining portions of south Arabian Sea and some portions of central Arabian Sea, most of Kerala, Gulf of Mannar most of south Tamil Nadu, entire Lakshadweep area, some additional portions of southwest, central, and northeast Bay of Bengal and remaining portions of Comorin area today.”

Earlier Prediction By IMD On Monsoon Arrival

Kerala typically experiences the arrival of the southwest monsoon on June 1, with a standard deviation of roughly seven days. The IMD predicted the monsoon might hit Kerala by June 4 in mid-May.

With a three-day error margin, Skymet had predicted the beginning of the monsoon over Kerala on June 7.

Cyclone “Biparjoy” had been affecting the strength of the monsoon

Before that, according to meteorologists, Cyclone “Biparjoy” had been affecting the strength of the monsoon, and its approach over Kerala would be “mild.”

Within 24 hours, Biparjoy Cyclone intensified into a powerful cyclonic storm

Within the next 24 hours, Biparjoy is expecting to move toward the north and strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm. According to the most recent bulletin released by the India Meteorological Department, it would then move north-northwestward during the following three days.

Vice president of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet’s remark

According to Mahesh Palawat, vice president of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet, “the beginning of the Southwest monsoon is currently postponed by six days, and due to the formation of the cyclonic chaos, the commencement of monsoon over the Kerala coast could be pushed back by another two to three days.”

The south peninsula and central India experience a slow monsoon advance once it arrives over Kerala. By June 12, the central Arabian Sea may experience the development of the monsoon current and an intensification of the monsoon.

“The development of cyclonic storm Biparjoy is thought to be the reason why the monsoon is weak in the southern peninsula and central parts of the country. In light of this, the monsoon is not considered promising,” he continued.

According to a Skymet meteorologist, a weak and postponed monsoon will probably account for 20% of June’s long-period average (LPA) rainfall.
