Manipur Violence: A person set on fire in a disturbing clip


Police have confirmed that a 7-second video of a Kuki-Zomi community member suffering burns in Manipur on Sunday is from a tragedy in the Thoubal district. The incident occurred on May 4, and police opened a case. The disputed video depicts a man with burns covering his body and injuries on his face lying stationary outside in camouflage-print trousers and a black shirt.

The video also features audible background noises resembling loud shots. The police official claimed that the clip of the man getting burned was from a similar string of violent events that occurred on May 4, under the purview of the Nongpok Sekmai police station. The ethnic conflict in Manipur began in May and spread to other areas of the state.

According to a senior Manipur police official, the Kuki-Zomi community member who appears burned in the 7-second footage is from a tragedy from 4, the second day of violence in Manipur, in the Meitei-dominated Thoubal district. According to police, they opened a case at that time concerning the incident.

About the disturbing clip

The disputed video began to get widely shared on the internet and WhatsApp groups on the evening of October 8. It depicts a man with burns covering his body and injuries on his face lying stationary on the ground outside in camouflage-print trousers and a black shirt.

Although their faces disappear and only two pairs of legs are visible in the frame, it is possible to hear multiple individuals asking that no pictures or videos get taken in Manipuri. Additionally, there are audible background noises that resemble loud shots.

Both viral videos date from the same time

A video that showed two Kuki-Zomi women presented naked by a group of men and subjected to sexual assault surfaced in July, sparking outrage across the nation. The police official claimed that the clip of the man getting burned was from a similar string of violent events that gripped that area on May 4. That incident also occurred in Thoubal district on May 4, under the purview of the Nongpok Sekmai police station. In the incident, police arrested seven people.

Manipur Violence Is On Since May 5

The ethnic conflict that Manipur is experiencing started in May in the region that lies on the border between the Kuki-Zomi-dominated Churachandpur district and the Meitei-dominated Bishnupur district. It quickly spread to other areas of the state.

A mob rampaged through Thoubal on May 4 in response to rumors that Meitei nurses got raped at Churachandpur Medical College; however, on May 5, the then-DGP P Doungel disproved these claims.
