The Indian batters wanted to “go after” Wellalage instead of letting him establish a rhythm, as he did in the Super 4 game. Wellalage, a young left-arm spinner, destroyed India’s batting lineup with a career-best ODI graph of 5/40, taking the wickets of Hardik Pandya, Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. Wellalage’s performance was exceptional, as he tested the right-handers on both edges and dismissed five batters in the top five. India won by 41 runs en route to the Asia Cup final.

“Dunith Wellalage was accurate. He secured five wickets and completed the task for his group. He seemed to be Sri Lanka’s most dangerous bowler. What else is there to say? He dismissed five batters in the top five. After the game, India won by 41 runs en route to the Asia Cup final. It was an excellent game for him,” KL Rahul told reporters.

Wellalage’s performance turned even more exceptional when he tested the right-handers on both edges. With a delivery that tossed on the middle and turned to smash the peak of the off stump, he got things going by confusing Gill. After Kohli made a mistake shot, the left-arm spinner dismissed him with a pitch that prevented on the surface.
