Experts predict that Russia will use the talks to demand anti-tank missiles and artillery shells from North Korea as a trade for sophisticated satellite technology and submarines powered by nuclear energy.

Vladimir Putin welcomed Kim Jong Un

As President Vladimir Putin welcomed Kim Jong Un on Wednesday to a spaceport in the Far East, the isolated nation’s leader pledged closer ties with Moscow, declaring his commitment to the impoverished country would “always be with Russia.”

Russian interest in buying ammunition

After escalating hostilities in Ukraine last year, Russia received little support from the West and is trying to forge connections with other hardline leaders. “Russian interest in purchasing ammunition from North Korea for deployment in the ongoing war in Ukraine,” according to US officials and experts, would defy international sanctions against Moscow.

Putin expressed his “great pleasure”

Putin conveyed his “great delight” at having Kim visit his country and suggested that Russia could assist North Korea in developing satellites. He also indicated that the two nations may discuss military cooperation.

North Korea’s “number one priority”

Kim assured Vladimir Putin that bilateral relations with Russia would be North Korea’s “number one priority” and that Russia was fending off “hegemonist forces” attempting to jeopardize its security.

Kim’s statement

Video of Kim’s remarks appeared on Russian TV. “We have consistently demonstrated complete and unreserved backing of every step taken by the Russian government, and I take this moment further to reaffirm our alliance will always be with Russia,” Kim said.

Agenda of the summit

According to experts, Russia will probably use the negotiations to ask North Korea for anti-tank missiles and artillery shells in exchange for advanced satellite technology and nuclear-powered submarines. When questioned by the media about whether military cooperation would be on that checklist, Putin replied, “There is time. Without rushing, we’ll discuss every issue.”

Photographs on Russian state television showed that both Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu participated in the discussions with Kim.

Kim expressed his gratitude to Putin

Kim’s entourage claimed that the summit would have a solid military emphasis as he traveled by land to Russia in his bulletproof train. Despite Putin’s “busy schedule,” Kim expressed his gratitude to him for the invitation.

In violation of yet another set of sanctions while Kim was in Russia, Pyongyang fired the two missiles on Wednesday, according to the South Korean military.
