INDIA alliance charges Google and Facebook for Encouraging Racial Hatred


The INDIA alliance has accused Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg of inciting racial hatred through their social media platforms. The opposition coalition INDIA has demanded that both networks maintain impartiality in the approaching 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Washington Post newspaper’s accusations of bias against Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube in favor of the BJP and the Narendra Modi administration sparked the letters. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge shared the letter on X, pointing to the Washington Post’s allegations of Facebook India management’s partisanship towards the current government. The alliance has demanded that Meta maintain its neutral position in India for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The opposition coalition “INDIA bloc” alleged Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg of complicity in inciting racial hatred through their social media platforms. INDIA asked in its messages to Google and Facebook that both networks uphold impartiality in the approaching 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The letters originated in response to allegations of discrimination by the Washington Post newspaper against Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube in favor of the BJP and the Narendra Modi government.

The letter appeared by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on X (formerly Twitter), with the caption “Letter by INDIA organizations to Facebook’s Mr. Mark Zuckerberg (@finkd) pointing to the comprehensive inquiries by the Washington Post that Meta is responsible for aiding social unrest and encouraging communal hatred in India.”

The contribution of WhatsApp and Facebook

INDIA alliance then demanded that Meta maintain its neutral position in India. “In the context of the forthcoming national elections in 2024, it is our sincere and immediate plea to you to take these issues seriously and guarantee instantly that Meta’s activities in India stay neutral and do not serve intentionally or unintentionally to trigger chaos or exaggerate India’s much treasured democratic ideals,” it stated.
