Caught in a significant political turmoil due to the BJP’s push for a strength test in the Assembly, Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu asserted that the Congress has sufficient numbers to complete its full five-year term. The BJP, buoyed by its unexpected victory in the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat and cross-voting by six Congress MLAs and three Independents, intensified its attack.

Critics have blamed Mr. Sukhu for the lack of cohesion within the party, as Himachal Pradesh remains the only state in North India under Congress rule.

Responding to the situation, Mr. Sukhu mentioned unmet political aspirations and bribery as factors. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, he stated, “Some MLAs had political ambitions that couldn’t be fulfilled. You cannot meet everyone’s political aspirations, and some people were bribed.”

Despite the challenges, Sukhu emphasized that the Congress still holds the majority with 34 MLAs compared to the BJP’s 25. He questioned the legitimacy of the BJP’s claim to majority, pointing out that the rebels within the Congress have not been expelled.

While the Congress initially secured 40 out of 68 seats in the state, the numbers shifted as six Congress MLAs voted for the BJP candidate, supported by three Independents. The Assembly Speaker later expelled 15 BJP MLAs, reducing the effective strength to 53 and bringing the majority mark down to 27, well within reach for the Congress.

The Chief Minister dismissed rumors of his resignation and expressed confidence in proving the majority. Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu criticized the six party lawmakers who supported the BJP in the Rajya Sabha polls, calling for an assessment of the party’s assets and liabilities. He emphasized the need to purge the party of those prioritizing personal gain over collective good, stating that their actions inflict profound wounds on the party’s existence.
