Election Commission names Sachin Tendulkar “national icon”


Sachin Tendulkar, a legendary cricketer, will be recognized as the “national icon” for Election Commission (EC) to encourage voter awareness. Tendulkar, who played for India in 200 Tests and 463 One-Day Internationals, will sign a three-year contract to promote voter awareness. The EC aims to tackle urban and youth voter disinterest through collaboration and aligns with well-known Indians from various fields.

Tendulkar’s legacy will get used to boost voter involvement in the upcoming elections, particularly in the general elections to Lok Sabha in 2024. Veterans like MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan, and Mary Kom have previously been among the EC’s national icons during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

National icon Tendulkar will encourage voter awareness

To promote higher involvement of voters in the voting process, the Election Commission (EC) will recognize cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar as a “national icon” on Wednesday. Tendulkar and the election panel will sign a protocol here on Wednesday. Tendulkar’s three-year contract includes him promoting voter awareness.

EC’s statement

“This association represents an important breakthrough regarding employing Tendulkar’s legendary influence with young voters to boost voters’ involvement in the upcoming elections, especially in the general elections (to Lok Sabha), 2024,” the EC stated in an announcement.
