Maharashtra Cabinet expansion

Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction secured finance and six other departments in the Cabinet, a development that may cause cracks in the newly formed ruling coalition in Maharashtra.

After Ajit Pawar and eight NCP MLAs entered the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government almost two weeks ago, the coalition has since grown.

The Deputy CM faction gained control of the finance and planning, food and civil supplies, cooperatives, women and child development, agriculture, relief and rehabilitation, and medical education departments in the Maharashtra Cabinet expansion.

Ajit Pawar will lead finance division

Ajit Pawar, deputy chief minister, will continue to lead the finance and planning division.
Chhagan Bhujbal will be in charge of the Food and Civic Supplies department, while Dhananjay Munde and Hasan Mushrif will hold the Agriculture and medical education departments, respectively.

Aditi Tatkare will oversee the Women and Child Welfare Department, while Dharmarao Atram will secure the Food and Drug Administration division.

Today, representatives from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) arrived at Raj Bhavan, the Governor’s official residence, to complete and provide the list of portfolio distribution.

Split of NCP

Ajit Pawar and eight NCP MLAs took oaths of office as ministers on July 2. The Sharad Pawar-led group broke apart as a result of the unexpected move.

Cabinet Expansion was on hold for weeks

A fight over the distribution of portfolios resulted from the induction of NCP leaders, the newest member of the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition. The Cabinet expansion was put on hold for weeks due to an argument between the Ajit Pawar camp and the Eknath Shinde faction.

Aside from the chief minister and two deputy chief ministers, the Maharashtra Cabinet now includes nine members from the BJP, nine from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and nine from the NCP. It can consist of a maximum of 43 people.

Ajit Pawar, who lobbied for significant portfolios for his party members during his interactions with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, sees the allocation of the lucrative finance portfolio to the NCP as a significant victory.
