The first reviews for Christopher Nolan’s excellent historical film Oppenheimer are now available, and the reviews are mostly positive. According to nearly 150 reviews, it currently has a ‘fresh’ 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. J. Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist, embarked on a daring mission to build the first atomic bomb in the 1940s. The crucial performance by longtime Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy is already getting Oscar’s attention.

Reviews of Oppenheimer are mainly positive

The initial reviews for Christopher Nolan’s outstanding historical film Oppenheimer became available, and the reviews are mostly positive. While a few people weren’t as taken with the picture as most others, Oppenheimer is one of Nolan’s best-reviewed projects.

According to nearly 150 reviews, it currently has a ‘fresh’ 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus being that “Oppenheimer signifies another captivating accomplishment from Christopher Nolan that profited from Cillian Murphy’s tour-de-force efficiency and dazzling visuals.”

Cillian Murphy’s performance is receiving Oscar buzz

In the 1940s, physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer set out on a dramatic quest to create the first atomic bomb. Longtime Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy’s pivotal performance is already receiving Oscar buzz. For the supporting roles, the film also features Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, and many other actors.

Movie Reviews

“This is a film about terrible risks and a planet probably destined to destroy itself someday. And we sense it as we see it,” Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune wrote.

According to Manohla Dargis of The New York Times, “Oppenheimer is an outstanding accomplishment in intellectual and logical terms, and fully consuming, but Nolan’s filmmaking is, especially, in service to the past that it relates.”

Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian described the film as “the big bang.”

Tomris Laffly of The Wrap wrote, “Nolan’s biopic on the father of the atomic bomb is powerful and ethically complex, raised by Cillian Murphy’s exacting performance.”

However, not every review is favorable.

“Like its lead character, Oppenheimer is a work constantly at odds with itself, with most of its issues stemming from Nolan’s screenplay,” according to Alonso Duralde of The Film Verdict.

Odie Henderson of the Boston Globe stated, “What I can state for certain is that “Oppenheimer” frequently appears more like a three-hour Wikipedia access than an intriguing movie.”

Rotten Tomatoes reviews

Rotten Tomatoes lists The Dark Knight from 2008 as having received Nolan’s best reviews (94%). Oppenheimer received the same 92% rating as Dunkirk and Insomnia. His least popular movie is Tenet from 2020, which has a 69% rating.
