After the Delhi High Court denied them any relief on Wednesday, the Supreme Court announced that it would hear Purkayastha and Chakravarty’s two separate appeals against their arrests under the anti-terror law UAPA on October 19.

The Supreme Court asked for the Delhi Police’s answer

The Supreme Court asked for the Delhi Police’s response to the petitions Prabir Purkayastha, the founder and editor of NewsClick, and Amit Chakravarty, the head of HR, brought to contest their detention in the UAPA case. The court decided to take up the case again on October 30.

Senior solicitors Kapil Sibal and Devadatt Kamat, representing Purkayastha and Chakravarty, respectively, were present when a bench of Justices BR Gavai and Prashant Kumar Mishra decided to take up the petitions.

The Supreme Court selected to list the case urgently

On October 16, after Sibal brought it up before the bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the Supreme Court decided to list the matter urgently. The CJI instructed Sibal to distribute the case documents and stated, “He would decide whether to list the matter urgently.” “We must examine the files. Tomorrow, we will consider both cases,” said Justice Gavai.

The Delhi High Court denied their appeals

They then petitioned the high court, contesting the arrest and the seven-day police detention and asking for immediate release as a temporary remedy. Although there was no procedural error or violation of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in their arrest, the court declined to grant them relief. They got in judicial custody for ten days on October 10 by the trial court.
