In a further blow to bilateral relations, Canada announced on Monday that it was “proactively pursuing reliable allegations” that Indian government agents were responsible behind the slaying of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia in June.

In an urgent statement to the House of Commons, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau referred to any participation by a foreign government in the death of a Canadian citizen as “an inappropriate breach of our sovereignty.”
According to Trudeau, “Canadian law enforcement officials have been diligently investigating trustworthy claims of a possible association between agents of the authorities of India” and Nijar’s passing.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Khalistani leader
On June 18, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, was shot and killed in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a sizable Sikh population. Nijjar received the designation of a “terrorist” by India in July 2020 and advocated for a Khalistani state that would serve as a Sikh homeland.

On the fringes of the G20 summit in New Delhi last week, Trudeau claimed to have brought up the assassination directly with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He asked the Indian government to “cooperate with Canada to reach the bottom of this issue.”
“The highest-ranking intellect and security personnel of the Indian government were aware of Canada’s serious worries. I personally and directly presented them to Prime Minister Modi last week at the G20,” he claimed.

The highest-ranking intelligence agent for India in Canada received a dismissal on Monday, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said without going into further detail. Requests for comment from the Indian High Commission in Ottawa went unanswered.
